How Microsoft can crush Google

Dare points to this insightful, if nefarious, post on how Microsoft could crush Google in one easy step.

I've long made the argument that Google is not a technology company, but rather an advertising / media company. Clearly, the distinction between technology and media is at least blurring.  In fact, it was observed at a recent nextNY event that a lot of startups - particularly those in New York - are less about "technology" and more about employing it intelligently.

Though it's unrealistic and unlikely that Microsoft would (or could) ever do this, the post recognizes a simple truth sometimes lost in this discussion: unlike Microsoft (or Apple), Google doesn't really "sell" anything. (Search appliances and Google Premier Apps aren't even on the radar). They are largely dependent on advertising, and most of their products, purchases and partnerships are about securing vehicles for that advertising.

As Henry suggests, Google would be disproportionally affected by the loss of a major vehicle for those ads (or, for example, by the loss of a major advertiser).

Incubate This!

There is lots of debate as to what the bottlenecks for innovation are in NYC.  Space.  Cost.  Money.  Professional services with startup knowhow...     And one approach at solving this is the incubator.

Ahhh, yes... the incubator.

Because there's nothing better than a machine that grows babies, chickens, and startups.

But seriously, what exactly does an incubator do and where are they in NYC?

One thing that really struck me was that, when I was at USV, incubators didn't seem to get prominent attention in the startup world.  I found them tough to locate and I wasn't always aware of what was going on in them.

I'm curious about people's experiences with incubators and if there isn't something that can be done to elevate awareness about them here in NYC.

Here are a few that I know of, but would like to know more about:

NYSIA Incubator

NYU Stern Incubator
Polytechnic Incubator
Second Century (Pace)

Perhaps it is worth doing some kind of nextNY event where reps from all the incubators can get together and just tell people what they're all about?

If you've been involved with one of these, you should join nextNY, b/c we're a group that really wants to know about these sorts of things and could be where you get your future tenants.

co-Darren-working

Today, NYC-based entrepreneur/celeb Darren Herman unveiled his plans to put a coworking space in the ultra-cheap and accessible Financial District. He has good company in those parts, as he’s joining the NYSIA’s Incubator and projecting competitive rates.

To cut to the chase, questions have been raised about whether this is in competition with cafeBricolage… and I wanted to emphatically say “hell no! We’re excited!”

Also, we’re hoping our coworking movement loyalist friends welcome Darren’s move with equally open arms.

We see Darren’s move as one which will ultimately stimulate the NYC new-media/start-up/entrepreneurial community, and we unreservedly believe that his vision for a coworking-only space is an important one in this equation.

Moving forward we’re glad to have another community member standing up for small start-ups, and we look forward to seeing the results! (We also look forward to seeing what he ultimately calls he space, with DarrenCamp and DarrenSalon already is the books, perhaps we can count on another entity bearing his mark.)

Tech Meetup Coverage at CNNMoney

Oliver Ryan covers last nights NY Tech Meetup:

In short, not a weak player in last night’s line-up, and that alone is yet another sign that tech start-up fever continues to rise as spring creeps wetly into New York.

Where Are the Tech Startups?

A fascinating graph from O’Reilly’s Radar: And who said NY isn’t active in the startup scene? If you are a member of a tech startup or digital media startp here in NY, check out nextNY to meet other likeminded people.

Why you should Waxxi (Thursday @ 1:30pm)

Something very exciting is happening this Thursday, April 5th at 1:30pm, New York City based Waxxi is hosting an interactive live podcast with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. While anyone can listen live without registering, I encourage you to register here and experience the full interactivity of the podcast. It should be a very exciting and interesting event.

On a personal note, I’ve spoken in great detail with Waxxi CEO Tracy Sheridan, and I’ve become a firm believer of her company’s vision. Indeed, the current broadcast/podcast duality is too rigid and Waxxi has a compelling solution. While the most obvious value added is for podcast listeners and would-be-interactive audience members (radio stations should be knocking on her door), it’s just as interesting a service when you consider how important engagement is for the podcast authors: Whether you’re a journalist, media company, or even consumer products company, finding new ways to interact with your audience or customers is a must in today’s and tomorrow’s world. Waxxi presents an option, and, from what I understand, it’s a major reason they’ve relocated to NYC from the other alley.

Anyway, this Thursday’s broadcast/podcast will be my first Waxxi experience, and I look forward to it very much. I’ve already listened to The World of Web 2.0 event with Michael Parekh and Michael Arrington, and I found it to be quite — what’s the word I’m looking for? — engaging, so I think we can only expect the same on Thursday with Mr. Jimmy Wales.

No sleep ’till Brooklyn
