Web 2.0 Meetup Going ‘Mobile’, Hitting The Airwaves

The September Web 2.0 Meetup may be three weeks away (Monday September 24th), but we’re ready to announce a few details about the event.

First, as fall approaches, we’ve decided to add a few new features. We’ve decided upon a mobile theme for the the September Web 2.0 Meetup. We’re going to choose a different theme every month so that we can showcase many of the new and innovative companies in New York who fall into a specific category.

Next, our presenter, John C. Havens, will be streaming the event live via his company, BlogTalkRadio.com. John will not only be fielding questions from our live audience, but his listeners online as well. We’ll also have live streaming video, too.

Our other two confirmed presenters are Socialight and Winksite.

Socialight allows its user to use their mobile phones to “…create, share, and discover virtual Sticky Notes placed at specific locations using your mobile phone or the web.” An example of Socialight’s service include posting a review about a restaurant your friends can read, or you can learn about specific landmarks in an area with additional information before you’re even there. Some of their new features include adding text and photos as well as (soon) video and audio clips. CEO Dan Melinger will be both speaking and presenting on behalf of the company.

Winksite is a company that focuses upon mobile social networking. Users are allowed to create their own personalized website/profile, which are accessible on both regular and mobile Internet browsers, and establish connections with other members of the service. Other additional features include the addition of Twitter, comments, places you like, and more. David Harper, founder of Winksite, is also the co-founder of Mobile Monday NY.

Click here to RSVP to the Web 2.0 September 2007 Meetup, or stop on by on Monday September 24th. We’re holding the event at Slate Plus, which is located at 54 West 21st Street.

For Your Imagination redefining web video

For Your Imagination, probably the coolest company in New York, produces original web shows like The Patrice O’Neal Show - Coming Soon! and The Shirtless Apprentice. But their real pioneering role may be in figuring out the economics of web video for content producers.

Tonight For Your Imagination is hosting the monthly Video 2.0 meetup.

CooperBricolage Grand Opening Party: 9/5 - 4pm

Come to the CooperBricolage Grand Opening Party

Wednesday, Septermber 5th, 4pm
CooperBricolage — 9 St. Marks Place

Expected and invited guests are:

* Venture Capitalists from NYC
* Angel Investors from NYC and the Tri-State Area
* Entrepreneurs like you
* Designers, developers and interactive people looking to build the community
Here’s the full invite from Sanford:

All -

I (and the CooBric team) wanted to invite you to the Grand Opening event for cooperBricolage - the first shared coworking space for entrepreneurial start-ups in the East Village. Building on the model of coworking made fashionable in the West Coast, cooperBricolage is building upon Peter Cooper’s vision of education for all New Yorkers and the energy of collaboration and innovation that makes New York City one of the most vibrant communities in the world.

cooperBricolage is a community effort by like-minded entrepreneurs who sought an alternative to their home offices and rent-a-spaces within this bustling metropolis. Working with other local businesses to create the start of an entrepreneurial ecosystem, cooperBricolage is a model of a community members club giving New York the step forward in supporting technology and creative businesses.

What is at CooBric?
CooBric, as others have come to call it, is a combination of a café, private members club and a workspace for designers, developers and entrepreneurs. Instead of being slotted into a small, busy Starbucks(tm), CooBric offers a different third-space but without the noise, expense and constraints found within these standard “third-spaces” Additionally, the ability to find like-minded people trying to build companies, code software or design graphics is sorely lacking in New York City - which CooBric presents itself as a space to be “found in”.

Spurred on by various concepts like coworking (coined by Citizen Agency) and cafeBricolage (coined by Nate Westheimer), cooperBricolage is a fusion of the history of Cooper Union and its history of creating innovation and entrepreneurship with the entrepreneurial energy found within New York City, but had few options to engage.
We invite you to come to our event - September 5th, 4pm at Cafe Fuego (9 St Marks Place)

But this effort will only succeed with support from the community - you included. This is why we would ask for you to come and meet some of our entrepreneurs and other supporters of the concept (including some venture capitalists and angel investors) to create something that is uniquely New York.

We look forward to seeing you - and feel free to read more about us in our blog (www.coobric.com) or other places on the web.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

The CooBric Comm (Tony, Sanford, Jennifer, Alex and Nate)

Come on up to Central Park's Hecksher Field #2, right by Columbus Circle at 6:15 today (Friday, August 24th).  We'll try and get the first pitch off at 6:30, but if we have some 1.0 guys, they might need a little more time to stretch.  :)

Feel free to pull friends and folks from your companies...   we have extra spots.

Alley Insider: Is it Lift Off?

You all remember how I posted about the launch of the Silicon Alley Insider last month?

Well, since then (see the blip on July 24th below) they’ve certainly filled their roll by dishing “unwanted” gossip to local start-up celebs and covering NYC news with PaidContent-like thoroughness. As if the ticker and rag combo wasn’t enough, folks also get Henry Blodget’s business analysis, which is — let’s face it — better 9 times out of 10 than some random blogger’s musings of a Wall Street he or she has never walked down before.

Now it seems that the Insider has found its place among the blogs of record. Today on O’Reilly Radar, Nat Torkington cited Blodget’s research into Google and Yahoo!’s latest 10-Ks, and a quick search on Technorati shows a host of others , including Read/Write Web, Mashable, Valley Wag, Webware and Jeff Jarvis’ BuzzMachine turning to the publication for news leads and analysis.

So what does this all mean? Why have I been paying such close attention to this blog? Like I said in my earlier post, we need this in NYC. Long-tail and “web 2.0 compliant” (a phrase I learned in the Web 2 Expo expo hall) or not, having a paper of record is a great thing for an industry — it’s a vital part of the ecosystem I talked about in the cafeBricolage Manifesto. If these guys have what it takes to be that “paper” — and they come at it with the right pedigree, after all — then bravo, amen, and let’s join the bandwagon.

CafeMom Brings Both Dollars and Sense to Web 2.0, Raises $5 Million

CafeMom, the mother-oriented social networking community, just announced yesterday that it has raised $5 million in their latest round of funding from Highland Capital Partners and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. (source: VentureWire)

On Monday, CafeMom presented at the Web 2.0 Meetup in New York City. Matt Zarzecki, CafeMom’s Senior Director of Design and User Experience, spoke about the company’s history and success as well as the influence the web 2.0 community has had on their ability to grow. They have developed some innovative tools and features that raised a number of eyebrows (and questions) from the audience.

CafeMom has introduced a handful of new features that help bring web 2.0 to the mainstream. Some of the features include a Twitter-like tool that allows its members to post their “thought bubbles”, a robust third party and sponsor widget library, and the ability to personalize/customize the design and layouts of member pages (with design and layout tools).

CafeMom is owned by CMI Marketing, which was founded in 1999 by Andrew Shue (of Melrose Place fame and brother to actress Elisabeth Shue) and Michael Sanchez.

YouTube debuts ad system

YouTube’s new ad systemAfter talking to many startups over the last year YouTube picked their best ideas and came up with these overlay ads, similar to what VideoEgg and New York-based ScanScout have developed. Apologies for the whiny guitar band.
