#140Conf NY Meetup: Twitter, Prison Culture Similar

NYConvergence ORIGINAL

140Conf The #140Conf New York Meetup, an outgrowth of the June 2009 140 Character Conference, was held last night at the 3LD Art & Technology Center in Manhattan's Financial District neighborhood last night; presenters, some from the New York area, included:

  • New York University's Jay Rosen, who discussed how Twitter has impacted PR, noting that "since souces can go direct, it's everybody's responsibility to tell the truth now."
  • Twitterkids' AJ and Melissa Leon, who talked about their use of Twitter and Tumblr to teach children children at Shepherds Junior, a school in Arusha, Tanzania, English.  The Leons adapted a similar program Melissa Leon had created and run at a school in Manhattan's East Harlem neighbohood for this purpose.  (This project, initially sponsored by Epic Change, whose Tweetsgiving we attended, is becoming its own non-profit.)

The evening concluded with a talk by a former inmate, whose name was not on the official program, about how the culture of Twitter is similar to that of prison as on Twitter "you're only as good as your word."
