Bloomberg Outlines 2010 Tech Initiatives for NYC
NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a number of technology initiatives during his 2010 State of the City Address today, saying, “bringing City government into the 21st century also means maximizing the power of technology”. Plans include:
- Expand NYC’s Business Express permits and regulations Web site to cover multiple industry sectors.
- Create a 311-type single point of contact system for small-business owners and managers to apply for permits and licenses and make payments.
- Merge the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting with NYC TV.
- Implement a feature on www.nyc.gov to allow New Yorkers with automated meters track and control water usage.
- Establish a pilot program to install GPS devices on NYC school buses to track location and send text messages when approaching stops and also distribute GPS-embedded bracelets to locate seniors with Alzheimer’s.
- Integrate new technologies into NYC government by having more NYC agencies begin using social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter.
- Launch a second round of the NYC Big Apps competition, inviting the public to use NYC data to create web or mobile government applications.
