NYConvergence ORIGINAL Urbansignals hosted a launch event in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood last night at Safeharbor Gallery to promote its new iPhone application that aims to "solve the 'missed connection' phenomenon." Founder Aubree Nichols (pictured) told NYConvergence that Urbansignals allows its users to instantly message other users nearby on the application's GPS map, eliminating the need for them to resort to Craigslist to try to find the object of their affection.

NYConvergence ORIGINAL Bob Lessin, last night's moderator at the NY Tech -10 +10 event, posed this question early on to participants Kevin Ryan of Alleycorp and Henry Blodget of The Business Insider in order to gauge how much more attractive "tech" has become since the "cracks" began appearing in NYC's culture's focus on Wall Street financiers. Although the question wasn't definitively answered, it did serve to set the tone for the discussion about the past ten years of NYC's tech culture and what it will look like in ten years, a conversation that included:
- Blodget's belief that NYC is more about content while Silicon Valley is more about infrastructure; Ryan disagreed, saying at one point that the Valley has become "irrelevant"
- Ryan noted that there are more engineers in NYC whereas in the late 90s, startups complained about their lack
- Ryan also highlighted the fact that there are more venture capital firms in Boston than in NYC, but these firms are also moving people here
- Blodget believes that hyperlocal news Web sites like the Patch, financed by local ads could work, but he doesn't see computer-powered aggregators taking over for humans
- Ryan still sees a place for advertising agencies, but agencies need to be more tech-savvy
Lessin, the moderator, is from Jeffries Inc. and the event was organized by his son's, Sam Lessin's, Brooklyn Future Meetup Group and held at the 92YTribeca in Manhattan's TriBeCa neighborhood. Related:> Drop.io's Key Investor Reveals His Reason for Investing
NYConvergence ORIGINALNYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a number of technology initiatives during his 2010 State of the City Address today, saying, “bringing City government into the 21st century also means maximizing the power of technology”. Plans include:
- Expand NYC’s Business Express permits and regulations Web site to cover multiple industry sectors.
- Create a 311-type single point of contact system for small-business owners and managers to apply for permits and licenses and make payments.
- Merge the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting with NYC TV.
- Implement a feature on www.nyc.gov to allow New Yorkers with automated meters track and control water usage.
- Establish a pilot program to install GPS devices on NYC school buses to track location and send text messages when approaching stops and also distribute GPS-embedded bracelets to locate seniors with Alzheimer’s.
- Integrate new technologies into NYC government by having more NYC agencies begin using social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter.
- Launch a second round of the NYC Big Apps competition, inviting the public to use NYC data to create web or mobile government applications.

New York's Fashion 2.0 Meetup kicked off 2010 with a dapper crowd, free vodka and presentations from three local start-ups. These presenting companies all had technology tools at their core, but the businesses were fitted for fashion. The presenters were scrutinized by a panel of investors, made up of veteran venture capitalists and fashion industry executives. "I see the next wave of entrepreneurship in this industry, much like I saw it in the technology sector fifteen years ago," said panel member David Freschman, Founder and Chairman of FashInvest, LLC.
Coveted List showed off a proprietary data system allows users to search over 25,000 SKUs by body type. Automated rules associate each fashion piece with certain physical attributes, and the user is then able to narrow down findings most suitable for their own physique. Market Publique presented their home-grown solution for a online marketplace devoted to sales of vintage fashions, and Udorse (which we've posted about before) demoed their solution for allowing users to endorse the brands that appear in their Facebook and Twitter photos.
The evening ended with a presentation by Diana Eng, well-known for her role in season two of the television show Project Runway, demonstrating her new site FairytaleFashion.org. The site aims to educate the public about math, science and technology by demonstrating how these concepts can be utilized to create a fashion line.
"I love young businesses," said panel member Denise Seegal. "I'm really happy to be here and am very curious about what's next." Previous:> Fashion 2.0 Presents 'Future of Media' Panel> Fashion 2.0 Presents Startups Showcase

NYConvergence ORIGINAL Snac, a NY-based company and one of the presenters at today's PluggedIn: The Mobile and Social Media Summit, demonstrated its downloadable mobile application that creates an "iPhone-like interface on nearly 300 different mobile phones- both smartphones, and most importantly regular phones." The summit (pictured) was held in two locations which are party of the Sy Syms School of Business on Yeshiva University's campus in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighborhood. The interface bore a resemblance to an application familiar to users of older Palm devices and other PDAs, Vindigo. And later on in the presentation, the company's representative, Kevin King, informed the attendees that had been at that company, which "aimed to bring a broader range of information to the Palm Pilot platform."
